First Step Cambodia

First Step Cambodia is a local NGO, designed to meet the needs of boy victims and survivors of sexual abuse and their families, carers, supporters and communities in Cambodia.

Vision

We envision Cambodia where children live and grow up in a safe environment and are able to fulfill their potential.

Mission

We are working to ensure that boys are free from sexual abuse, and are protected and are empowered to live in safe, nurturing families.

What First Step is Doing

Prevention

First Step Cambodia has also developed a range of Advocacy and Capacity Development resources and tools on sexual abuse of boys and girls and on children displaying harmful sexual behaviours. They are then disseminated to children, parents, relevant professionals, community key people and local authority in a range of workshops and forums in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and surrounding provinces.

Capacity Building

FSC provides a range of trainings and workshops on social work skills with boy survivors of sexual abuse, children displaying harmful sexual behaviours, supervision. In addition, they also provide capacity building on  case management, support for people with alcohol problems, and with families to social workers, child protection professionals and government personnel working to protect children in Cambodia and throughout the region.

Social Work and Support Service

Thus far, First Step Cambodia’s social work team has been working with boy and girl survivors of sexual abuse, children displaying harmful sexual behaviours and their families—aiming at building their capacity to cope with their problems and recover from their experiences. The demand for FSC’s services for boys, girls and family, affected by sexual abuse and sexually harmful behaviors, has grown since we commenced provision in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Action with Family Care First (FCF)

First Step Cambodia had been working with Hagar on the Social Work Standards and Training Needs Assessment from October 2016 to August 2018. Family Care First and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation are now finalizing the three standards.

Currently, First Step Cambodia is working to stabilize and scale existing therapeutic and practical support to children and family in Siem Reap province, ensuring that children live in safe, nurturing families.

First Step Cambodia aims to improve provision of care for 96 children affected by sexual abuse and children displaying sexually harmful behaviour within 24 months. They are also working to improve the provision of support and capacity for 79 families and caregivers of children affected by sexual abuse and children displaying sexually harmful behavior. In addition, awareness and partnership with relevant professionals and government officials will be increased, to ensure the improvement of care for children and families affected by the issues.
